This week, I’m sharing a personal story about how tough love helped me shift from workaholism to finding balance and how you can use constructive feedback to fuel positive change.
3 Ideas from Me
I. Embracing Tough Love: Finding Balance Between Work and Family
Over a decade ago, I faced a tough decision—keep climbing the career ladder or choose my family.
My wife was eight months pregnant, and the demands of my work as a surgeon were overwhelming. It took a kick from my unborn child to realize I needed to hit pause.
I took time off, reflected deeply, and ultimately chose family over career. But here’s the thing—it wasn’t a sacrifice.
I reimagined my path, pursuing further education and certifications, all while keeping my family at the center.
Tough love meant making the hard choice that ultimately brought me fulfillment.
Take-home point: You don’t have to choose between success and family. Tough love is about making intentional decisions that align with your values.
II. Constructive Feedback: A Tool for Growth
Constructive feedback can be uncomfortable, but it’s essential.
During my workaholic phase, my wife’s candid feedback helped me see the bigger picture. Without her, I might have kept spiraling into burnout.
Whether it’s in relationships or leadership, embracing feedback helps us grow.
Leaders who listen and act on feedback build stronger teams and better relationships.
Take-home point: Feedback is a mirror. Use it to reflect and adjust—whether in life or leadership.
III. Facilitating Change: The First Step is Key
Making a significant life change requires more than desire—it demands action.
For me, the first step was acknowledging that my workaholic tendencies were unsustainable.
The next was taking decisive action by stepping back and re-evaluating my priorities.
Many people get stuck here, knowing something needs to change but hesitating to take the leap.
Change is daunting, but without it, growth stagnates. Taking that first step is crucial, whether it’s a minor tweak to your daily routine or a significant career shift.
Ask yourself: What’s one thing you can do today to create positive change?
It could be as simple as having a meaningful conversation with a loved one or setting more precise boundaries between work and personal time.
Take-home point: The most challenging part of change is often the first step. Take it with courage.

“There is no such thing as work-life balance. Everything worth fighting for unbalances your life.”– Alain de Botton.
“The first step towards getting somewhere is to decide you’re not going to stay where you are.”– J.P. Morgan.
