Here are 3 ideas from me, 2 quotes from others, and 1 question to ponder this week.
3 Ideas From Me
I. Building Trust
Building trust has been a cornerstone of my career and personal relationships.
Early in my medical practice, I faced a significant challenge with a patient who was skeptical about my treatment recommendations.
Despite my extensive experience, this patient doubted my expertise due to their negative healthcare experience.
Here’s how I built trust:
- Be Transparent: I took extra time to explain each step of the treatment plan, ensuring the patient understood and felt involved in their care.
- Follow Through: I followed up regularly to monitor their progress and show that I genuinely cared about their well-being.
- Show Respect: I listened to their concerns without judgment and adjusted the treatment based on their feedback.
I gradually built a trusting relationship with the patient by maintaining consistency and showing respect.
Trust is the foundation of every relationship, whether with clients, colleagues, or loved ones and is built through consistent actions and genuine care.
II. Embracing Vulnerability
Embracing vulnerability can be daunting, but I’ve learned to value it over the years. Growing up, I struggled to openly share my uncertainties and failures. I feared that they would judge me critically and undermine my authority.
Here’s what changed:
- Be Open About Feelings: During a challenging project, I openly shared my concerns and the mistakes I had made along the way. This honesty helped create a more supportive environment where others felt comfortable sharing their struggles.
- Accept Imperfection: acknowledging my imperfections made me more relatable and trustworthy. It encouraged others to be open about their challenges and fostered a culture of mutual support.
- Encourage Openness: By modeling vulnerability, I encouraged my clients and team members to express their fears and uncertainties, leading to better outcomes.
Embracing vulnerability isn’t about weakness; it’s about being human and creating more profound, authentic connections with those around you.
III. Leading with Purpose
Effective leadership requires a clear sense of purpose. I experienced and practiced these concepts during the Tasmanian Leaders Program last year and at work.
At some point, my team and I navigated through a complex project, and without a clear vision, we struggled with direction and motivation.
Here’s how I led with purpose:
- Define Your Vision: I articulated a clear, compelling vision for the project, aligning our goals with our core values. This helped the team understand the “why” behind our work and inspired commitment.
- Align Actions with Purpose: I ensured that every action and decision reflected our shared vision, ensuring we remained focused on our ultimate goal.
- Empower Others: I encouraged team members to take ownership of their roles and contribute their unique strengths to the project, fostering a sense of collective purpose and collaboration.
Leading with purpose drives success and fosters a motivated and engaged team.
